Call it goo or blob or gunk, this stuff is dark and thick, and can be seen for miles away. The US Coast Guard has ruled out an oil spill or some other hazardous substance, but the nobody really knows what this stuff is.

The substance has appeared out of nowhere in the Chukchi Sea, which is somewhere near Alaska. In places, it is up to 15 miles long. It looks hairy, and maybe it could be some unknown form of algae or bacteria colony, that so far has lived at the bottom of that dark and cold ocean, but at this point, nobody knows what it is.

“From the air it looks brownish with some sheen, but when you get close and put it up on the ice and in the bucket, it’s kind of blackish stuff and has hairy strands on it,” said Gordon Brower of the North Slope Borough’s planning department.

Samples of the substance have been taken to Anchorage for testing, but the results will only be known sometime next week.
